Even if you have not exercised for a long time, it’s not too late to start.Consult your GP prior to beginning a more active lifestyle and ask for information on STARS, (Shropshire and Telford Activity Referral Scheme for advice 01952 597634).
It doesn’t have to be hard work!
Aim to walk for 30 minutes a day on 5 days of each week. If you can’t manage 30 minutes in one go, try two 15 minute or three 10 minute walks on 2 or 3 days of the week and gradually build up to a longer and more regular walk.Walk at a pace with which you feel comfortable.Don’t push yourself too hard.During the walk, you should feel slightly warmer and be a little out of breath, but not so much that you cannot hold a conversation with another person.
Listen to your body!
If you feel any dizziness or pain whilst walking, slow down or stop completely and take a rest. If the problem continues, consult your doctor before walking again.
Finally
If you prefer walking on your own that’s fine, but why not do your friends or family members a favour and ask them to join you. That way, more people will appreciate the health benefits of walking, too!
